We Made It!

This got lost in the shuffle but posting now… check out our pictures so far!

After a re-route from Washington D.C. to Chicago, we arrived in Amsterdam around 9:30AM. Unfortunately, I’ve fallen a bit under the weather in the last 36 hours but I’m stocking up on liquids (tea and Vitamin C) and spending my first foreign night tucked under the covers at our gracious host’s house. Upon arrival we met Dmitri and Alex, Michael’s cousins, who have opened their homes to us without hesitation. A big shout out to them for their hospitality!

First impressions of Weesp, the town we’ll be staying in for our Amsterdam adventures:

  • It’s really, really cute. There are windmills, brick roads, unique homes and beautiful canals. Are we going to get lost? Most definitely but at least the scenery will be great while we’re trying to find our way back. And let’s be honest, getting lost usually leads to the best stories.
  • The grocery stores are awesome. My friend Julia said she’s seen portable scanners in the stores in D.C. but this was our first encounter with them. The concept: Scan everything as you pick it up, plug the scanner in at check-out, pay your balance and away you go! Dmitri did mention that his 4-year-old son is better with the scanner than Michael though so it looks like we’ll need to practice a bit.
  • We’ve only been here a few hours so stay tuned for more!

Next up: Downtown Amsterdam and a family reunion…
